Lucky break

Just started reading the book, AntiCancer: A new Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD. I’m taking it with me to the grocery store tonight as a reference for all the foods I need to buy to prevent ticking off my cancer cells. As the tagline says, “All of us have cancer cells in our bodies. But not all of us will develop cancer.” The reason this is the subject of my post today is due to the circumstances around his discovery of his brain cancer: serendipity in the extreme.
Servan-Schreiber was doing his internship in psychiatry in Pittsburgh and was involved in a grant-funded research project involving performing MRIs on “guinea pig” students while they performed mental tasks that stimulated their prefrontal cortex. One student didn’t show up this particular evening so Servan-Schreiber drew the short straw of his two research partners and got into the machine himself. The scan revealed a previously unknown, walnut-sized tumor in his prefrontal cortex. Lucky man. With no symptoms, it would have been too late to do anything by the time he knew he had a problem.
More than fifteen years later, he is sharing with us all his blueprint for combating and winning the war on cancer through “a new way of life.”

Lucky me, that this book came into my hands just as I was heading out to the grocery store anyway, on a mission to stock up on healthy items for my month-long cleanse, which starts tomorrow!

  2. And no sooner do we find or learn something we grow comfortable (and feel safe) with, another expert, study or book yields information to the contrary. I just yesterday read an online article (from a reputable medical source) that antioxidants may enhance or accelerate growth of some cancers. When I (often) come across conflicting medical findings, I simply go with the results that suit my mood and goals to thrive! Happy shopping. 🙂

      So frustrating and confusing! So many things we “can’t” eat anymore! The big one for me is the pros and cons concerning coconut oil. At this point I’m firmly in the huzzah! For coconut oil! camp … I think…

  3. I try to stick to the idea of moderation in all things. That said, we have drastically reduced our intake of bread in our home (gluten being the culprit here), purchase organic food as much as possible and supplement our diet with naturopathic-recommended vitamins, minerals, etc. Btw … with respect to the bread issue (because I love toast with my eggs) we go to the freezer section of the natural health food store and buy Ezekiel Bread. (http://www.foodforlife.com/about_us/ezekiel-49) Toasted it’s delicious … and it’s good for you! … Best of luck with your cleanse. That takes fortitude. 😉
