A is For Ancestor

The bank mom "robbed."

The bank mom “robbed.”

It’s serendipitous that the theme I have chosen for my 26-day A-Z Challenge starts with the first letter of the alphabet. As you may have learned from some previous posts, one of my passions is genealogy and family history. I recently gave a presentation to a group of DAR members. Their reasons for doing their genealogy may be far different from someone who was adopted, or someone trying to understand their place in the world. Lorine over at Olive Tree Genealogy posed the question, “Why do you do genealogy?” and got some very insightful comments. I hope over the course of the next 26 days, you will come to understand why “Ancestor Hunting” is such a passion for me, as I share some helpful hints for those who would like to find their own royal link or horse-thief and “alphabetize” some vignettes from my own family’s history.

Personal Vignette

A is for Annie. My mom. You have already been introduced to her here and here. The story I’ll share today is one from when I was oh, about 8 years old, and was home from school, feeling sick. Mom worked in the High School cafeteria and was making a stop at the bank before dropping me off at the babysitter, then heading to work. Because of the extra stops, she was running late. Oh, and by the way, it was Halloween…I think I’ll just turn the time over to her as my “guest blogger” today, and let you hear it “in her own words.”

“We had to report in costume, so I went as a hobo: dirty face, torn ragged clothes and a plastic black derby hat.  I was carrying a burlap purse that looked like a sack, popular at that time…..I left the motor running, (you were in the front seat waiting) while I ran into bank.  I came running out shortly thereafter, jumped into the car and drove to Lorraine’s to let you out, then took off for North Middlesex Regional  School, a bit too fast, so I wouldn’t be late.  Meanwhile one of the old ladies who lived across from the bank had seen it all, called the cops and said a hobo had robbed the bank! She described the “get away” car and said it had a midget in the passenger seat (you!) and drove up a side street, then took off down Main St. I noticed a police cruiser behind me halfway to school so I slowed down, got pulled over and the cop didn’t recognize me, although we lived next door to the police station at the time and we knew all the police well [this was a very small town]. I explained the situation; he checked my “loot” and found my work apron and wallet stuffed in the bag, which I am sure made it appear to be stuffed with money. He laughed and let me go. I got to work and my lady boss asked me to go into the walk-in freezer and take the stuff out of the brown sack on the shelf so she could prepare it for lunch.  I didn’t know she was playing a joke on me, put my hand in the bag and felt something soft and feathery and started screaming! It was a pheasant, freshly killed, that someone had given her to take home for her own use. Needless to say it was an exciting morning for yours truly!”

Wonderful story of your mother and I’m glad you posted it. Someday, someone who is looking for information on the family will find it and get a glimpse into your mother’s life and personality. I am a family historian and passionate about knowing who my ancestor’s were as people and not dates and facts. I also started today with A is for Ancestor.

I recently made a “Heritage” ride to northern California where I looked up my ancestory a little bit deeper. Who knew I had 2 Senators, GGG & GG Grandfathers were both Judges & State Sen. I loved finding this out and since, I have received giant Tupperware boxes of documents and even hair from my GGG Grandmother still in a braid. I have connected…. and love it. Great post!

LOL you can’t make that stuff up!! Great story for the first day. Your research sounds so interesting; I have a friend in Virginia who works as a genealogy researcher and her tales are ever-entertaining.

  4. That is a great story. Although, I’m not to sure about the prank her boss played…

I know! that part of the story was new to me. The Bank robbery is part of family lore, but the pheasant was a surprise. Strange boss…could get written up for harassment today!

I am looking forward to your genealogy posts. My husband and I researched our family trees quite a bit and find it really interesting in general. My only problem is that I can’t trace back my dad’s family beyond the time they immigrated here in circa 1912 from Italy. Italian records aren’t that great so we have hit a bit if a dead end. (My father as well)

What a great family story. One to be told for generations.

When I told mom about this challenge, she actually came up with stories of her antics to go along with many alphabet letters…I had to cut them back to just a few–this is one of the greats!

  7. Aditi says:

Haha what a sight the two of you must have been. I am still laughing! 🙂
On another bote I am very much interested to explore genealogy with you! Happy A-Zing!

Ha! Halloween is yet again responsible for a mistaken identity…one of the many reasons why it is my favorite holiday. I look forward to learning more about your family history during the month of April! 😀

Great story! Looking forward to the next one. 🙂

  11. Love, love, LOOOVE this story, especially the “midget in the front seat”! Did Gladys Kravitz live across the street from the bank?!

My brother is totally into our family genealogy. He has gone back on both our mother’s and our father’s side to the mid-1700s and still hasn’t found out how any of them got to the US. We are one long line of Ozark hillbilly!

  13. Oh my goodness!! That’s too funny! Your poor mom! I would have been okay up until the feather part…. We actually did have a robbery one Halloween at the Credit Union located within the building where I worked. The robbers were dressed as clowns. Needless to say it was the last year we were allowed to work in costume! Thanks for sharing!

  15. Love that you started with your mom! And the story was great.

Hilarious! A midget as a sidekick. Bet that made the cop’s day to see how the suspects fit the description. I picked your blog at random from among 2,000-some in the list (well, I like art) and discovered that you and I both are using “in your own words” excerpts from our parents.

Very interesting! I really enjoyed it. Best regards, Ruby

  18. What a great story…look forward to reading the rest of your posts this month.

Great story – loved the post! I could just see this happening at the bank! Looking forward to reading more of your blogs.

HI–I thought I’d return your visit and discovered a wonderful surprise–I am SOOOOO into genealogy, too. I’ve read all three articles so far in the A-Z, and saw that you mentioned that your favorite genealogy research place is Familysearch.com. Are you LDS by chance? I’ve also written a few articles on genealogy, but not in the A-Z. Good luck!

    • gapark says:

Why, yes. yes I am! 🙂 Check out my About page for a link to my “I am A Mormon” Mormon.org post. Are you? (And if not, do you want to know more? 🙂 )

  21. Love the story. It must have been a dramatic day for your mom!

  22. Thanks for visiting from the A to Z. I’m actually participating over on my Panda Chronicles blog. If I really wanted to torture myself, I would have done it on the Nothing overlooked blog as well. Maybe favorite artists through the alphabet. Nah, one challenge a month is enough. Hope you get a chance to visit the pandas too at http://yourbrainonpandas.com
